Barbarea is a restaurant located in Kopli, within the Põhjala Factory. In the evenings, it serves as the second face of the Karjase Sai bakery. When the bakery closes its doors at 3:00 PM for two hours, the evening restaurant Barbarea opens at 5:30 PM in the same space.

The old rubber factory has come back to life as a cultural and community hub. The restaurant is housed in a 100-year-old blacksmith's building, where efforts have been made to preserve as much of the authentic and old elements as possible, both inside and out.

About the name Barbarea: Barbarea is a beautiful weed — the same yellow flower that blooms in Kopli and elsewhere with the sun, bringing color to its surroundings.

Recycling and Sustainability

The entire space is filled with items and furniture that have largely been repurposed and revitalized. Most of the furniture arrived at Barbarea in a very worn-out condition and was given a new life with the help of Egle Kõrvas. There is no unified vision or set style for the restaurant. Instead, the space has been created piece by piece, guided by intuition.

World Cuisine

The menu draws inspiration from various corners of the world, and all dishes are designed to be shared among the table to spark conversation and emotions among friends.

More Than Just a Place to Eat

Barbarea is a meeting place — a space where food, drinks, and emotions are shared with friends.

The entire menu is built around the concept of sharing. The spontaneous discussions that arise from sharing food with a group are one of the favorite aspects of dining at the restaurant. The menu is highly eclectic, taking inspiration from different parts of the world while using as much organic produce as possible, sourced from small Estonian farms.

"The creation of every menu begins with the selection of ingredients, which we take seriously and approach with great care. We collaborate with local organic farms and producers, aiming to showcase their work through our menu. We focus on what’s available in the current season, and if something extraordinary grows across the border, we’ll bring it to Kopli.”

Barbarea opened on a hot summer day, June 17, 2021. The restaurant is open Tuesday to Saturday, beginning a few hours after Karjase Sai closes its doors.
