In a former motorcycle repair shop behind the Old Port in Nice you will nowadays find the Michelin restaurant Jan. The motorcycles are long gone at Rue Lascaris and replaced with crystal chandeliers, 18th-century antiques and a tempting smell from the busy kitchen at Restaurant Jan.

South African roots

At restaurant Jan they serve modern French food with South African inspiration. The executive chef, Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen, grew up and learned how to cook in South Africa and he has brought with him his heritage from his homeland into the kitchen at his restaurant Jan at the French Riviera. You will taste how the dishes are inspired by the South African food culture and his old grandmothers traditional cooking combined with the fresh seasonal ingredients from the markets of the Southern France.

Michelin star

Jan Hendrik started his life as a chef in South Africa and since then he has worked as a yatch chef and as contributing food editor of Elle Magazine amongst other jobs. Today he has his own restaurant, Jan, which he opened in Nice back in 2013. Restaurant Jan quickly became a favorite amongst local foodies, as well as international tourists and food critics. In 2016 it was awarded its first Michelin star and the Michelin Guide Inspectors only has great things to say about the place: “In his intimate and romantic little restaurant near the port, he cooks creative and contemporary cuisine, much to the delight of customers passing through the French Riviera”.

Seasonal Kitchen

At Restaurant Jan they have no a la carte menu but a seasonal based tasting menu. The menu changes weekly and you can always find the latest menu here. Changing the menu regularly guarantees that you will always get a selection of the freshest produce prepared to the utmost perfection whenever you visit the restaurant.
